In recognition of “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day 2022”, LKB is proud to spotlight Nahomy Reyes as an inspiration and role model to girls’ futures in the engineering field.
Ms. Reyes is a recent graduate whose studies focused on structural steel design, traffic engineering, hydrology, and advanced reinforced concrete. She has gained experience in the construction inspection field while working as a TCI for the New York State Thruway Authority on a project involving the replacement of three overhead bridges. She has performed inspections for various construction operations in addition to assisting with placement of Work Zone Traffic Control and calculating quantities for construction activities. Ms. Reyes is proficient in AutoCAD, and is also bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish.
Why engineering? With a combination of enjoying math and being intrigued by the phenomena of physics, Nahomy explored these courses in college that led her to a profound interest in civil engineering. Nahomy would imagine the possibilities the future held in engineering and understood that this profession will always be a necessity. When describing her role and responsibilities of her profession to others, she states how fortunate she is to have the opportunity to go from having a set of contract plans in her hand to see those plans materialize into something physical. Engineering was a dream to several of her family members and she is proud to complete the path they paved. She gives tribute to her parents as her biggest inspiration.
Today, Nahomy is an LKB employee working as an Inspector/Assistant Office Engineer on the project where she first launched her career, Replacement of Three Overhead Bridges in the Town of Ramapo. Her responsibilities include overseeing the complete demolition of the existing bridges, installation and removal of the pedestrian bridge at Hungry Hollow and College Road bridges, installation of steel reinforcement for abutment and pier elements, concrete placement and testing for abutment and pier elements, erection of bearings and structure steel, steel reinforcement placement and concrete placement for bridge decks and approach slabs, installation of guide rail, utility relocation and reconstruction, sign structure installation and WZTC set ups. In addition, she also assists the office engineer with verifying quantities for payment, coordinating submittals and RFIs and orders on contract.
Outside of the engineering field, Nahomy has a hidden talent as an artist. We think her sketching talents will come in handy as her future unfolds.
