LKB Engineering was retained to provide site design and permitting services for the new three-story Galvin Middle School (grades 5–8) in Canton, Massachusetts. The school will be constructed on the site of the existing building, with phased construction allowing the current school to remain operational throughout the project. Key site constraints include bordering vegetated wetlands, bordering land subject to flooding, and a Zone II wellhead protection area covering approximately half the property. Several zoning constraints require variances and special permits.
The project includes the new school building with outdoor learning classrooms and green learning spaces, as well as an oversized multi-use field, outdoor hockey rink, basketball courts, parking and circulation improvements, utilities, stormwater management systems, full ADA accessibility, and site grading.
As part of the design team, LKB is providing design, construction documentation, and construction-phase services, while leading the permitting process, including Site Plan Review, Stormwater Approval, and Notice of Intent filings. Responsibilities also include coordination and oversight of subconsultants for traffic engineering, wetlands delineation, hydrant flow testing, surveying, soil testing, and geotechnical investigations. LKB is leading site design and permitting efforts in close collaboration with the Town and community stakeholders, including academic and youth sports representatives.
The new facility will provide the Town of Canton with a state-of-the-art middle school and introduce a new grade five program, creating additional capacity within the elementary schools.
