LKB Engineering was retained by the Village of Great Neck Plaza to provide preliminary and final design services as well as construction support for this federally funded project to incorporate
pedestrian and bicyclist enhancement improvements at Shoreward Drive/Welwyn Road.
This project also included improvements to vehicle parking areas.
The overall project involved the implementation of pedestrian and bicyclist enhancement
measures in order to address traffic congestion and improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety
in the project area. In addition, revisions and improvements were made to the existing
parking areas resulting in an increase in parking. The enhancements included the installation
of enhanced brick walkways, incorporating the Village’s standard, and reconfiguration
of the roadway to provide a raised, landscaped median and shoulder area, curb extensions
similar to other locations throughout the Village, and creation of a new mall area for public
use.
These improvements created a greater visual experience and improved accessibility
and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. Innovative design concepts such as raised
crosswalks and sharrow markings were employed through the project area. The existing
landscaped raised median was enlarged and extended, reducing the amount of pavement
and providing an improved aesthetic gateway from the west into the downtown Great
Neck Train Station area. Additional ornamental LED street lighting was provided throughout
the area to mitigate the low light levels that existed, and encouraging pedestrian travel.
All of the proposed improvements for this project were in conformance with the Village of Great Neck Plaza Complete Streets Policy Guide.
